GARBAGE DISPOSAL - The History

With the advent of modern towns and cities, and the effects of industrialisation on the environment, it has become increasingly necessary to find efficient waste management systems to deal with the increase in garbage generated.

Environmentalists warn that inadequate garbage collection and disposal methods pose a serious health risk both to inhabitants and the environment in terms of air and underground water pollution. This happens through increased toxic levels produced by burnt ash which pollutes the air, and decaying garbage that seeps underground contaminating water sources.

The first ever private garbage collection services in Kenya, Bins (Nairobi) Services Ltd began operating in 1989. To this day, BINS remains the No. 1 garbage company in Kenya.

BINS was started by a group of entrepreneurs, who recognised that the Nairobi City Council were no longer in a position to meet their obligations and decided to fill the gap in the provision of garbage collection and disposal services.

From humble beginnings in a small office, using mainly hired vehicles and a small yard, BINS has grown to become a customer driven organisation, with qualified trained personnel, a fleet of 12 trucks and its own premises housing a workshop and a fully computerised office.

1998 saw the emergence of new players in the industry's residential sector. BINS looked for new opportunities and now 70% of its turnover is generated from the industrial/ commercial sector compared to only 20% in 1997; we have also spread our wings into complementary services (see "Our Services" page).

INTO THE MILLENNIUM

BINS has been at the forefront of the industry since its inception in 1989. it is our objective to maintain that status by leading the industry into the 21st Century. We are regularly talking to the authorities and other relevant bodies in an attempt to get them to take the management of solid waste seriously. The ever growing population demands we manage waste better so that we don't get buried in it.

It is our vision at BINS to revive the city's environment to its former glory and return it to its once acclaimed status as the 'Green City in the Sun'. We must ensure the future health of the population and the protection of our environment by providing efficient garbage collection and disposal services at a reasonable price.

The success of this vision lies in our hands, and we must work together to reach our goals......
